THE BRIEF
The transition back to school from summer break can be difficult for some kids and teens. This August 17th article from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) has some tips and resources to help make returning to school go a little smoother.
KEY POINTS
For parents and guardians, SAMHSA says focusing on communication about concerns about starting school, creating routines for sleeping, eating, and relaxing; visiting the school and meeting teachers in advance, and encouraging social interactions (especially the in-person kind) are great steps to promoting a positive transition back to school. 1
For educators, SAMHSA recommends being up-to-date on training around common mental health concerns along with their signs and symptoms, fostering environments where kids feel safe to share their thoughts and concerns, and finding opportunities to introduce mental health education to help support and de-stigmatize these kinds of issues. 1
DOUBLE-CLICK
For some families, the pattern of seeing big behaviors during the school year is an unfortunate but predictable certainty. Fortunately, resources like Facts For Families put out by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry have some free and up-to-date information about some of the common issues that impact children and teens. 2
